- First-Aid Don’ts: Don’t Make It Worse
Most data loss caused by system crashes actually results from wrong actions taken after the crash. Never do these six things:
Don’t reinstall Windows immediately: formatting during installation permanently destroys all data
Don’t use “Reset this PC → Remove everything”: it overwrites your files
Don’t repeatedly run CHKDSK /f or automatic repair: on a drive with bad sectors it can destroy recoverable data
Don’t try random recovery tools: some write to the crashed drive
If you hear clicking or grinding noises, power off immediately: that’s a hardware failure signal — keeping it running only worsens the damage
Don’t format any partition: formatting means overwriting, and overwriting is irreversible
